2014 Year of the Doppelgänger: The Double vs The Enemy

Every year or so there is at least one pair of competing films that follow a very close premise. Some examples are: 1998's Antz and A Bug's Life, 2006's The Illusionist and the Prestige and 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror, Mirror.

Well, 2014 (both made in 2013) is the year of the Doppelgänger:

The Double (2013)

Director: Richard Ayoade

Principal Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Chris O'Dowd, Sally Hawkins, Craig Roberts, Paddy Considine, Noah Taylor, Yasmin Paige

In this comedic thriller a man (Eisenberg) is driven insane by the appearance of his doppelgänger. Directed by Richard Ayoade, Moss of the IT Crowd and director of Indie hit Submarine, this should be good.

The Enemy (2013)

Director: Denis Villeneuve

Principal Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Mélanie Laurent, Isabella Rosselini, Sarah Gadon

In this thriller a man seeks out his doppelgänger after spotting him in a movie. This looks really good…

The Rover (2014)

Director: David Michôd

Principal Cast: Robert Pattinson, Guy Pearce, Scott Mcnairy, David Field

David Michôd's next Aussie film is about a loner who tracks a gang who stole his car with the assistance of a guy wounded during the theft. Set in a desolate Australian outback town. Looks interesting, here the teaser trailer…

The Lunch Box (2013)

Director: Ritesh Batra

Principal Cast: Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui

And now for something a bit lighter. The Lunch Box is about a mistaken delivery in Mumbai's efficient lunchbox delivery system (which sounds awesome) connects a young housewife with an older man. This looks really charming…

The Babadook (2014)

Director: Jennifer Kent

Cast: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall

Aussie Horror Flick, The Babadook, creeps me out each time I watch the trailer. Essie Davis plays a single mother, plagued by the death of her husband, who battles to cope with her son's fear of monsters only to discover it may be real.

A Long Way Down (2014)

Director: Pascal Chumeil

Principal Cast: Aaron Paul, Rosamund Pike, Imogen Poots, Toni Collette, Pierce Brosnan, Sam Neill

A Long Way Down, based on the novel by Nick Hornby (About A Boy, High Fidelity), is about four suicidal strangers that meet on a rooftop on New Year's Eve and form an unexpected friendship. Looks good…

The Zero Theorem (2014)

Director: Terry Gilliam

Principal Cast: Christoph Waltz, Melanie Thierry, David Thewlis, Matt Damon, Ben Whishaw, Tilda Swinton

Because Terry Gilliam can't just make any ol' ordinary film be prepared to be dazzled by the colour and pop of The Zero Theorem which follows a computer hacker trying to find the reason for Human Existence…

Maleficent (2014)

Director: Robert Stromberg

Principal Cast: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning,Sharlto Copley

I posted the teaser in November 2013 and now here's the first trailer.

This is the Sleeping Beauty tale from the perspective of Maleficent and the events which drove her to curse Princess Aurora.

Under the Skin (2013)

Director: Jonathan Glazer

Principal Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan

This looks like something very different for Scarlett Johansson. In this Sci Fi Johansson plays an alien seductress who preys upon Hitchhikers in Scotland. Reminds me of Kubrick. Here's the teaser...

Grand Piano (2013)

Director: Eugenio Mira

Principal Cast: Elijah Wood, John Cusack

Not sure if this will come to cinemas or straight to video but I was intrigued by this trailer because of it's Hitchcock-ian feel. And I love a good Hitchcock.

Stars Elijah Wood as a pianist who suffers from stage fright and is put under some unexpected pressure during his comeback… Hitchcock would love this

New year, new films

I've been waiting for some inspiration and have finally got a selection of trailers to put up…
